Thirunelli Sree Maha Vishnu Temple is an ancient Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Maha Vishnu, located in the Brahmagiri Hills of Wayanad, Kerala. It is one of Kerala’s most revered pilgrimage sites, renowned for its spiritual significance, centuries-old architecture, and rituals honoring ancestors.

History and significance
Often referred to as the “Kashi of the South” or Sahyamala Kshetram, the temple is believed by tradition to have been consecrated by Lord Brahma. Historical records and architectural evidence indicate that it has existed for at least a millennium, with references in early Malayalam literature and connections to the Chera period.

One of the temple’s most distinctive features is its association with Papanasini, a sacred mountain stream where devotees perform ancestral rites (Pithru Tharpanam/Bali). According to temple tradition, it is among the few places where rituals connected with every stage of life—from birth to posthumous ceremonies—can be performed.

Architecture and surroundings
The temple showcases traditional Kerala temple architecture, featuring granite construction, intricately carved pillars, a copper-roofed sanctum, and an ancient stone aqueduct that channels water from the surrounding hills. Set within a forested valley at about 900 meters (2,950 feet) above sea level, it is surrounded by the scenic Brahmagiri range, creating a tranquil atmosphere that appeals to both pilgrims and nature enthusiasts.
